The United Way of the Greenbrier Valley was formed in 1986 by a group of volunteers concerned about state and federal cutbacks to service agencies in the area.

The United Way of the Greenbrier Valley is a chartered member of United Way of America. Our local chapter, however, is autonomous and all decisions are made locally. The volunteer board of directors has representation from all three counties - Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas.

Our annual campaign is unique to other campaigns in the area in that it comes only once a year, and offers options for the donor - a variety of payment plans, designations to agencies of choice, and support of the community crisis fund.
Results from the annual campaign determine the level of funding for members agencies. The more money that is raised, the more that can be allocated to programs and services helping those in need in the Greenbrier Valley.
Funds are allocated to United Way member agencies with programs and services addressing the five priorities of the United Way:
1. Investing in children and youth
2. Strengthening families and individual lives
3. Promoting senior independence
4. Caring for people in crisis
5. Improving health and wellness
The Allocations Committee is a standing committee of the United Way and is responsible for reviewing agency funding requests, conducting agency site visits, and interviewing agency representatives. The Allocations Committee makes a recommendation of fund distribution to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has the final vote.

Born Learning

We know that by the time children reach kindergarten, there is already a tremendous difference between those who have had quality learning experiences and those who have not. What if every child had five years of education before kindergarten? Children are learning constantly, right from birth, and what happends in a child's early years matters — for success in life and for school readiness.

The Born Learning initiative is designed specifically to help young children prepare for school. It provides parents and caregivers tips and advice to create quality early learning opportunities for young children, and "doable" action steps that make it easy — and fun — to help young children learn during everyday activities such as sorting laundry or grocery shopping.

The Born Learning initiative includes a year of tips and advice through your local newspapers and radio stations, access to the Born Learning web site http://www.bornlearning.org, computers and age-appropriate software, in area child care centers, educational forums for parents and caregivers, and distribution of the latest research based early childhood educational materials.

Warming Hands & Hearts

In the fall of 2005, United Way's social services agencies and faith based groups across the state of West Virginia formed collaboratives to assist low-income families who could not afford the cost home heating during the winter months. This state-wide initiative was named Warming Hands & Hearts.

In 2005, United Way of the Greenbirer Valley provided initial funding to start county FCOCs (Family Collaborative Oversight Committees) in Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas Counties. These collaborative groups, with representation from community service providers and faith based groups, meet regularly to review emergency assistance requests. United Way provided a second round of funding in 2006 after the initial funds were used serving 141 families consisting of 216 adults and 156 children.
